Who We Are...
We are an action-oriented collaboration representing providers, resident-advocates, state and federal
regulators and direct care workers dedicated to starting a “new conversation” about care in nursing homes.
We have joined forces to foster culture change on a broader scale than can be achieved through any one of
the organizations’ individual efforts.
A new conversation...
Until recently, providers, regulators, and resident advocates have polarized around diverse strategies
for enhancing care in nursing facilities. Although the various stakeholders were well intentioned, the
conversation about how to improve nursing homes was predictable and mostly unproductive. Despite efforts
to make improvements in many areas, most nursing homes continue to struggle with a range of challenges,
from negative social stigma, high rates of staff turnover and quality of care issues.
However research studies have shown that transforming the organizational culture or nursing homes to
one that is person-centered and resident-directed improves staff retention and resident outcomes.
Collectively, these practices are referred to as "culture change." The California Culture Change
Coalition provides a forum for regulatory agencies, providers, resident advocates and labor to come
together to change the nature of the dialogue around nursing homes. That alone is a noteworthy breakthrough.
However, simply reaching agreement about improved organizational practices is insufficient. Providers
need to be supported in a variety of ways as they undertake organizational transformation in their facilities.
The Coalition serves as a resource for the dissemination of culture change practices and is engaged in activities
that directly benefit providers.
